About Redmine 3.3.x

Added by Andriy Lesyuk over 7 years ago

This release celebrated the 10th anniversary of Redmine. It comes with the following noticable features:

  • It's now possible to have a special "+" menu item in the project menu, that allows to create new issues, documents, Wiki pages and so on. This new menu item replaces the old "New issue", if enabled.
  • The jsToolbar CodeRay extension plugin, that is reviewed in the book (page 284), is no longer needed, as Redmine 3.3 now comes with a native toolbar button, that helps inserting code blocks for programming languages quickly and easily.
  • It's now possible to configure issue management permissions (such as view, create, comment and delete) for each tracker separately.
  • Redmine now sends notifications to all administrators, when some security-related settings are changed by one of them.

The first edition of the Mastering Redmine book was published in 2013, i.e., almost 3 years ago. In that edition we discussed Redmine 2.2 and currently the most recent version of Redmine is 3.1. So, the book is quite outdated... While still it is not useless (not much was changed in Redmine since 2.2, to be honest), potential buyers, i.e., new Redmine users, do not know this and, therefore, don't order the book.

So, there is no wonder, that Packt Publishing asked me to update it. And, yes, I'm going to start working on the second edition of Mastering Redmine!

While the main purpose of the second addition is to be just up-to-date, I will use this chance to improve the book as much as I can. In particular, I'm going to:

  • Improve English of the book
  • Remove mentions of ChiliProject, as it's, unfortunately, dead
  • Review different plugins in Chapter 10, Plugins and Themes
  • Update everything for Redmine 3.1
